BP Batam, through its Directorate of Infrastructure Development, is undertaking the Pelita Underpass Revitalisation project as part of its commitment to improving infrastructure quality and enhancing the city's appearance.

The Pelita underpass is a strategic route connecting the government and commercial areas of Batam Center with the business and tourism centres in the Nagoya area.

Besides playing an important role in supporting community mobility, this underpass is also an iconic infrastructure as the only underpass in Batam City.

Over time, the condition of the underpass has deteriorated in terms of both functionality and aesthetics.

Graffiti, suboptimal lighting, and a poorly functioning drainage system all have the potential to disrupt the comfort and safety of road users.

In response to these conditions, BP Batam carried out a comprehensive revitalisation with the scope of work including landscape arrangement through planting, clearing drainage channels, repainting walls, road markings and curbs, installing light boxes containing Batam City's development vision, and improving the lighting system.

Head of BP Batam, Amsakar Achmad, said the project will be carried out from April to May 2026, with a construction period of two months.

This underpass is planned to have dimensions of approximately 90 metres in length, 18 metres in width, and 5 metres in height, with funding sourced from the maintenance budget of the BP Batam Infrastructure Development Directorate and the Batam City Government's Public Works and Water Resources Department.

Amsakar stated that this revitalisation not only focuses on physical aspects, but also on improving the quality of public services.

“The revitalisation of the Pelita Underpass is a strategic step to ensure the safety, comfort, and smooth mobility of the community. We want to present an infrastructure that not only functions optimally but also has aesthetic value as a representation of Batam City's progress,” he said.

It was further conveyed that improving lighting quality and the drainage system are priorities to minimise accident risks and prevent water pooling that can damage the road surface.

“With the comprehensive improvements carried out, we are optimistic that the Pelita Underpass will once again become a safe, comfortable, and proud route for the people of Batam,” he added.

Currently, the work is progressing, covering the planting of ornamental plants, clearing of drainage channels, and site measurement for painting, installation of light boxes, and lighting repairs.

Through this revitalisation, Amsakar hopes to improve infrastructure quality while also strengthening the city's identity.

“Not only the underpass, gradually, BP Batam will also carry out revitalisation in other areas,” he concluded.

In relation to this, the public is urged to help maintain public facilities and avoid acts of vandalism for the sake of mutual sustainability. (RUD)
