Deputy Head of BP Batam, Li Claudia Chandra, “intervened” to take action against illegal sand mining activities in Kampung Jabi, Nongsa District, Sunday (12/4/2026).

This step is a rapid response to mitigate the environmental impact of these activities, as well as to monitor the Airport Safety Zone (KKOP) of Hang Nadim International Airport, Batam.

During the review, Li Claudia, along with a joint team from BP Batam Security and the Riau Islands Regional Police, found at least four locations suspected of engaging in illegal sand mining activities.

“Halt existing illegal sand mining operations. This activity is dangerous and causes environmental damage. Furthermore, this activity clearly violates applicable laws and regulations,” emphasised Li Claudia at the scene of the crackdown.

Besides the legal aspects, Li Claudia also highlighted the environmental impact. According to her, illegal mining activities have the potential to damage ecosystems, disrupt the natural balance, and increase the risk of disasters such as floods and landslides.

These impacts, continued Li Claudia, are not only felt now but will also burden future generations.

“Action must be immediate and firm. If violations are proven, they must be processed criminally to have a deterrent effect,” he added.

He stressed that BP Batam would strengthen coordination with law enforcement agencies and related authorities to ensure the enforcement process runs effectively. Surveillance in vulnerable areas will also be increased, including through routine patrols and community involvement in reporting illegal activities.

On the other hand, Li Claudia also invited the public to actively participate in environmental protection and report any suspicious activities. She believes public participation is a key factor in preventing illegal practices that harm many parties.

“These decisive steps are expected not only to stop illegal sand mining activities in Kampung Jabi but also to serve as a warning to other perpetrators not to commit similar violations,” he concluded. (DN)
