Member/Deputy for Public Services at BP Batam, Ariastuty Sirait, inspected the forest fire site in the Nongsa Reservoir area on Friday (27/3/2026). Ariastuty directly monitored the firefighting process and ensured that the handling measures taken were proceeding well.

During her monitoring, Ariastuty stated that the fire was first discovered on Thursday afternoon, (26/3/2026). Subsequently, a joint team comprising BP Batam, the Batam City Government, the Police, TNI, Manggala Agni and business operators immediately commenced firefighting operations, which concluded by midnight.

However, due to the very high level of dryness and fairly strong winds, the fire spread again on Friday morning (27/3/2026). From drone observations, the total area of the protected forest that was burned was approximately 3.85 hectares.

“This area is indeed very prone to catching fire. This is because it's an area with many dry branches and leaves, as well as peatland that still contains husks within it,” explained Ariastuty.

Therefore, they have asked the public to remain vigilant and avoid actions that could potentially cause forest and land fires. The steps and efforts that can be taken include not carelessly discarding cigarette butts in forests or dry land, as well as burning rubbish.

In addition, Ariastuty also asked the public not to utilise the burned land. This is because illegal land use is a violation of the law and will result in sanctions in accordance with applicable laws.

“We naturally ask the public to act as an extension of the government and police. Please report immediately if any individuals intentionally or unintentionally start fires in forests or on land,” he concluded. (EI)
